Qatar national team coach Julian Lopetegui detailed the factors behind his side's exit from the Gulf Cup 27. The Maroon lost to hosts Saudi Arabia 3-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation and extra time on October 3.

Lopetegui said his players faced significant psychological pressure during the decisive shootout. He added that the team performed better in training but faltered in the actual match. The Spanish coach pointed to fatigue, fewer rest days compared to the opponent, and the impact of hot weather as reasons for adopting a defensive approach.

Match Challenges

Saudi Arabia benefited from home advantage and crowd support, according to Lopetegui's assessment. The coach noted that the opponent made eight changes in their final group match, an option not available to Qatar due to a shorter preparation period. This disparity in recovery affected the players' energy levels during extra time.

To counter this, Lopetegui introduced Akram Afif to inject fresh energy onto the pitch. He confirmed he had warned his players beforehand that the match could go to penalties, but execution in the decisive moment was different.

Confidence for the Future

Despite the loss, Lopetegui expressed immense pride in his team's performance. He said, "We lost on penalties because we wasted some kicks, but I think Qatari fans should be extremely proud of the spirit, heart, energy, and fight the players showed against a very strong team, which is the tournament host playing in front of its fans."

He added that the players fought "like lions until the last minute" and were close to eliminating what he described as possibly the best team in the tournament. This performance bolsters his confidence in the team's future, stating, "If we always have this character and spirit... We will be able to compete with any national team."

This strong display comes in the context of noticeable improvement under Lopetegui. Upon taking charge, the team suffered heavy defeats to the UAE and Iran, but has since built a competitiveness shown in World Cup qualifying and this tournament.

Recent results show a level of consistency, with the team recording a draw and a win before the shootout loss. In their last five matches, Qatar's form reads two draws, two wins, and one defeat. The actual result before facing Saudi Arabia was a 1-1 draw with the UAE on September 30.

The Qatari national team now prepares for its next challenge in World Cup qualifying. The upcoming task is a home fixture against Australia on November 13, a key match fans can prepare for by checking the upcoming fixtures. Lopetegui is counting on the high morale displayed in the Gulf Cup to achieve a positive result against the Socceroos. The focus will be on improving the scoring rate, as the team has managed only 4 goals in its last 5 matches.
